Wedding Vows
What are they?
Wedding vows are words spoken by the couple to one another that outline just what makes the other so special to them and what they will do in the future. Love is one of our greatest motivators and vows are an opportunity to publicly state your thoughts and feelings towards your spouse-to-be before your family and friends.
How Long Should They Be?
The modern trend is toward shorter vows, but the important thing is that you say everything you want to. No right or wrong answer, but the average is between 2:30-3:00 mins.
You can share your word count with your partner for a rough idea on length. But remember we all speak differently and phrasing plays a part in length too. There are many variables that affect length such as laughter, tears, cadence and unexpected interruptions!
Many couples aim to have similar length vows, but also remember that no one has a stopwatch on you. It is more important that you say what you feel necessary.
What do I need to say?
According to the Marriage Act 1961, couples need to say words to the effect of: “I call upon the persons here present to witness that I ‘x’ take you ‘y’ to be my lawful wedded husband/wife/spouse”. These are a minimum legal requirement, however, in practice, many couples use the opportunity to craft a passage that outlines a little more than the legal words.
Do I have to print them?
I print your vows for you, unless you would prefer to do this yourself, or use a vow book. I use A4 paper and the largest font possible, without looking ridiculous, and mount them on elegant clipboards for you to read from. If you have more than one page, I find a good page break for me to swap over to the next clipboard.
How can I make them amazing?
Many couples don’t even know where to start when beginning their wedding vows, so as un-sexy as it sounds, a template can really help you organise your thoughts and feelings.
Keep scrolling to see just how easy it can be to create memorable, heartfelt vows that will have your partner in tears of happiness.
And on the Day?
Feel free to hold the microphone yourself if that’s your style, but I’m happy to it for you whilst you deliver your vows. This can work well so you can focus on the words and being there with your partner. Many people find it difficult to manage microphone positioning, delivery, eye contact and emotion all at once, so, at lease we can simplify things if I hold the mic.
Worked Example
The legal bit.
I call upon the persons here present to witness that I, Megan [Middle & Surname] Leah Doherty take you, Adrian [Middle & Surname] Paul McWilliams to be my lawful wedded husband / spouse.
Things you love about your partner.
When I really think about the type of person I want to spend the rest of my life with, I come back to three important traits: dependability, ambition and kindness. And you, Adrian are overflowing in all these areas. It’s the way you always remember the things I don’t, it’s the way you are so focused on your career and progression, but never forget about me and the way you give so much of yourself to everyone. This is the type of man that I can’t wait to wake up each and every day. I still have to pinch myself that I’m marrying that man today.
Something your partner has brought out in you.
Adrian, you understand me. You inspire and encourage me to grow. You give me a calm head when I'm uncertain and you help me see how important our future is. I'm a different, better woman than the one you swiped right on all those years ago, and I wouldn't have it any other way.
Some things that you promise to do for your partner going forward.
So, from here ever-after, I promise to do my share of the housework. To share my joy with you as I'll always be there to share yours. To laugh together everyday, because without laughter, what’s the point! To ride the waves and enjoy the calm waters with you. But most of all, I will be there for you, every day, for the rest of mine
Close.
Adrian, I love you and I am so lucky to walk through life with you.
